What did you want to be when you grew up?

I am pretty sure I wanted to be a jockey when I was little but the honest truth is I don’t think I’ve ever really known what I wanted to be when I grow up. When are we officially grown up anyway? LOL!

I’ve been lucky to have a lot of really cool career paths including being a published author. One of my favorite “grown up” jobs was when I landed my dream job after I graduated college. I interviewed for and was offered a position in the music industry as a Marketing Representative for one of the biggest music distribution companies in the world so I decided to try on a career in New York City.

Through the years, I went on to work as an Artist Development Representative for Sony Music Entertainment and then Universal Music. I met a lot of rock stars, pop stars and all sorts of talent in between. I saw hundreds of live concerts. I am a huge music lover and I feel so fortunate to have worked in the music industry before it was digitized. Not many people can say they’ve had tea with Lady Gaga, spent a day chauffeuring around Rage Against the Machine’s guitarist, Tom Morello, or took their father to meet Maroon 5 before anyone even knew who Adam Levine was! It was one of the most amazing times of my young adult life.

What do you do now?

I am an equestrian author who writes fiction about horses, horse shows, western pleasure and a handsome cowboy or two and run my own small business, Carly Kade Creative. Also, I hold a corporate position at a Fortune 250 Energy Company where I am a Manager of Strategic Talent in the Human Resources Department. In this role, I am responsible for strategic employer brand development, social media programs, event execution, talent communications, internal and external career site management, technology optimization and support of initiatives related to talent attraction of candidates to my company and employee mobility within the company.

I’m giving you a super power that will make your biggest dream come true–guaranteed. What’s going to happen?

I’d love to have a super power that produced a sense of calm in humans. The closest thing I’ve witnessed to this kind of super power is meditation (and horseback riding).

The stories we tell ourselves about not being good enough or loveable or liked are the thoughts that kill our dreams and stop us from being the change we want to see in the world! I’d love to have a magical wand of calmness that I could wave over humanity. In my imagination, it would heal our world and quiet the nasty, negative internal dialogue that we create for ourselves.

Did you ever give up on your dreams?

My first novel, In The Reins, took years to write because I wasn’t seriously considering publishing it. I shelved the book several times and didn’t work on it for long stretches because of self-doubt or thinking I was too busy but the story kept calling me. I’d been dancing through life for years with these characters in my head.

One particular blow was very hard to take early on in the development of my story. I learned a big lesson on just how delicate and fragile dreams can be when trusted to the wrong people. After being prodded, I shared a few early chapters of my book with a family member.

I had never let anyone read my work at that point. Nervously, I watched her read those first chapters, heart pounding, nail biting, and when she finished I took a deep breath and hoped for the best. My heart hurt as her face twisted and she slapped down those first chapters and said, “When are they going to get on with it already.” Um … isn’t the whole point of a romance novel to find out “when they are going to get it on already?”

I was a balloon and her words were the needle that popped my fragile dream before it had even started to rise. I put my book away and didn’t touch it again for four months until I finally got up the courage to ask why she had said what she said. During this conversation, I learned that this family member had never read a romance novel before nor had any interest in doing so. She told me she just preferred to read a business book … that’s all. With some serious convincing from my husband, I started working on In The Reins again. The story kept begging me to write it and so did my husband, my hero.

I shared a very creative, sensitive part of myself with someone I didn’t know very well and someone who didn’t even like my genre of writing. I should have known better! I am glad I only let it stop me for a short time because I am so happy to hear that readers are really enjoying the book. My biggest wish was to make others happy and help them escape reality for a while with my words.

There were many highs and lows in the process, insecurities and doubts, but mustering the courage to continually move forward is what makes me most proud. I am happy to report that the sequel is coming swiftly! Don’t ever give up on DREAMS!

What advice do you have for people who are trying to decide if they should chase their dreams?

I’ve found that when something seems scary it’s usually the path I need to take. One of my favorite questions is “What do you plan to do with your ONE wild and precious life?” I think the answer to that question is different for each of us but chasing a dream … whatever the dream is … is likely the next step after answering it!

If I had one piece of advice to offer on chasing dreams I would have to steal a page from Nike’s playbook and say “Just Do It!” As an author, I often wonder if I’ll have anything to write when I sit down to my morning writing sessions but then I JUST DO IT and the words magically come.

If your heart tells you to chase a dream then you must chase it! Don’t be afraid. Live your dream of being an author or a painter or an Olympic swimmer or whatever you want to be.

Fall in love with your dream because no one can pursue it the way you do! You are unique! Wake up excited to chase your dreams! What we think we become so trust your instinct and creativity. Just start … that’s all you have to do. Inspiration strikes in the most interesting ways.

If you were a superhero, who would you be and why?

Wonder Woman! She’s unstoppable. I have always admired her golden lasso and her hands-on-her-hips power pose. I like that power pose of hers so much I even wrote a blog post on how powering posing can help with horse show nerves! It’s called “Don’t Let Horse Show Nerves Get the Best of You!”
